Zebra Crossing of Church Road at Lidl roundabout
-General opinion is that it should be a bit further from the roundabout for safety
– Well used crossing point
– poor visibility from Lidl exit to see crossing point
– could traffic light crossing be used instead
– could it be moved away from roundabout a short distance (will people still cross here anyway ?)
– could it be raised to slow traffic
Remove slip road at church
Most people wish to retain this slip road and the parking it provides
Widen pavement/ narrow Chudleigh Road at Ide Lane to improve visibility when exiting Ide Lane
There is concern that reducing the space for turning from Ide lane into Chudleigh Road will affect buses and large vehicles, and be potentially unsafe.
Crossing at church lychgate
The crossing should be retained, but if island is removed it must be a zebra crossing. Church side pavement should be wider to accommodate wheelchair.
– crossing point used to access church gate
– valued refuge to help to cross
This crossing is at the only level access to the church
Chicane Chudleigh Road
There is much feeling against this proposed chicane from affected adjacent residents and others. Existing parked cars perform much the same function. Any chicane should initially be temporary construction.
– house owner right adjacent to road very concerned about idling vehicles and vibration damage to property
– house owners with driveway access very concerned about impact on ability to access with chicane in proposed location
Crossing at double roundabout
– is it really needed?
– crossing won’t slow traffic. Need enforcement and other methods. Don’t use us and our children to stop speeding traffic.
– don’t need wider pavement as can’t walk any further towards church as no pavement further down.
Speed cameras, Speedwatch
There is strong feeling that speed cameras are the only way to slow traffic on Chudleigh Road.
– speeding is a real issue, especially when roads are quiet. Unfortunately speedwatch is only a temporary deterrent – so cameras should be erected.
Chudleigh Road south of double mini roundabout
The “enhancements” proposal does not include any work to Chudleigh Road from double mini to boundary and beyond. School children will use this road, as will new residents in new developments.
– what about pedestrian crossings on Chudleigh Road towards Victoria Heights?
Other comments
– no actions to reduce traffic or deter use of Alphington as a cut through to Marsh Barton and Sainsburys junction.
– need to learn from Pinhoe. Maybe an Alphington travel plan?
– need to plan active travel routes, safety and speed before build the houses, not afterwards.
– budget £400k
– feasibility not yet assessed by DCC so don’t even know if they can do what is proposed. Attendees concerned that this approach had been taken.
– some residents supported closure of the road in front of the church but AVF strongly promoted keeping it open.
– some confusion re current rules about HGVs having access through Alphington and how rules have changed to allow house building HGVs access.
I only had one view before the meeting which was about the chicane in Chudleigh Rd, as I wrote when asked for my online views I am totally against them. If you go to Halberton in Mid Devon you will see the results, road rage after road rage, not a good sight and I stand by my comments. At the meeting I did think some people had a good point about the zebra crossing near Lidi being too close to the roundabout. Unfortunately Alphington has narrow roads in places so it would be difficult to put in larger pavements with out a big cost, and I know people don’t want to hear it but to increase pavement sizes a one way system around Dawlish Rd, Chantry Meadow and Chudleigh Rd could be an answer.
